When to Be Concerned

I know every baby develops at a different rate, but at some point, I start to wonder when I should be concerned.  Dylan's lack of walking isn't really getting to me yet.  I mean, he's definitely taking his time, but I'm really not worried.  Yet.

But what does have me a little worried is his lack of talking.  He's never been much of a babbler, and now at 16 1/2 months old, he doesn't even say "mama" or "dada."

Some sites I've checked say babies are supposed to do that by 12-15 months, and that by 18 months, they should know about 20-50 words.

Some sites say if he doesn't use gestures like pointing or waving bye-bye (which he rarely does either) by 12 months, that could be an indicator of a problem.

I don't think he shows any signs of hearing problems, since he responds just fine to everything I say.

But how long should I keep saying, "He'll talk/walk when he's ready," and at what point do I decide it's time to be concerned?

Anytime I find myself thinking a lot about something in terms of development for my child, I ease my nerves by talking to my pediatrician. Perhaps you've already done that, but if not, it's worth a try to see what he/she thinks.

Also, we have some friends here whose son wasn't much of a talker either when he should have been and they started him in speech therapy of some kind. They have seen lots of improvement. I could ask them what kind of therapy if you are interested.

That's a tough one. I have no great answers...Only time will tell.

Does he have two older brothers that bring him everything (hense not needing to walk to it?)? Do his brothers/parents talk for him? I wonder if he's just taking a back seat and taking it all in for a while. I hope that is the case, and that he shows interest in walking and talking sooner than later.

that's tough...taelin only says about 5 words, signs about 6, and that's all...he understands everything we ask him....but he just doens't want to say more...the doc says not to worry because understanding is better than actually talking....but good luck! i miss ya guys!
