I Want to Learn

I want to learn how to give my family better food choices, but there are several barriers in my way:

1- I really don't know where to start. I'm really interested in cutting down on processed foods, but I don't know how.
2- I am a really picky eater, and I'm pretty sure that when I take out the bad stuff, I'm just going to starve to death because there will be nothing left that I like to eat.
3- I don't really like to cook (although I am pretty good at it), and I'm worried that healthier will also mean more time consuming.
4- Our food budget is very small. I'm pretty sure that eating better means spending more money on food.

HELP ME! I really want to teach my kids to make good food choices, and I really want to help Kirk and I to be more healthy, but I really just don't know how to make it all work. Suggestions, please.

It's interesting that you blog about this now because Christopher and I started a healthier lifestyle about a week ago. We decided we wanted to get in the habit now so our kids would as well.

It took me this long because I was afraid it would be more expensive. Come to find out, it's expensive at the beginning, but then it gets better. They key is to buy your produce at Costco. We get recipe ideas from Kristyans blog. It's a much healthier way to eat and Kristyans kids are liking it.

Unfortunately, it does require a little bit more time in the kitchen if you want to cook something other than Kraft Mac and Cheese if you know what I mean. Good luck!

That's awesome. I've learned to be a better eater from Nick's mom and sisters, I don't know if you remember, but they are diet freaks. Well, some of them. I buy a lot of fresh produce, all sorts of things like squash and pears and things with high fiber. If I have it sitting around, I will use it because I don't want it to go bad. Nick is a salad lover, and he has an appetite for healthy food, which is lucky for me.

Oh, and with Owen, I make a veggie to go with every lunch and dinner. I buy the big bags of frozen long green beans and the peas from costco, which he eats pretty well. A trick I learned for cooking veggies like green beans is to add some bullion to the water when you boil them, it adds yummy flavor and kids like it better.

you should ck out our new blog. We have been doing this for about 2 1/2 weeks now and so far it has been easier than I thought.

Wow, you seem to be Becca's evil twin. You should give my wife a call. She has been eating super healthy for about a year and a half. While it is true, she has a little help, she could still give you some tips and lead you in the right direction. Not to mention, she would love to hear from you. It seams this holiday season has bee a little bit of an exception, but generally speaking our kids eat very little sugar. They behave a hundred times better when they are not on sugar.

I recommend the book Eat This, Not That, For Kids. It's no healthy-eating bible, but it has some really good ideas, and some eye-opening information, and in general, the approach is, if you're going to eat junk and fast food and convenience stuff, at least choose the BETTER options. It's a good place to start, especially if you want to start small.
